HUGO FELDTMANN (DATES UNKNOWN) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN / FAR EAST EXPRESS. Circa 1937.
33x23 1/2 inches, 84x60 cm. Wilh M. Jontzen, Bremen.
Condition A / A-: minor tears at edges. Paper.
Three sister ships launched in 1935, the Gneisenau, Potsdam and Scharnhorst all served the Bremen-Genoa-via Suez Canal-Shanghai route. Here with a touch of Japonisme, Feldtmann depicts the ships cruising behind the branch of a tree ladened with sparrows. Only the Potsdam survived the Second World War, remaining in service with the P & O Line and then the Pan-Islamic Steamship Company until 1976.
