Hungarian-born Gellert arrived in the United States with his family when he was 14 years old. He became a painter, printmaker and muralist. An avowed Socialist and eventually a member of the Communist party, his work is overtly political, but Gellert also worked as a staff artist for New Yorker Magazine and the New York Times in the 1920s. He is considered to be among the most influential American political artists in the era between the wars.
