HUGO STEINER-PRAG (1880-1945) CLOTILDE VON DERP. Circa 1913.
30x23 inches. Steiner, Prague.
Condition A-: crease in image. Paper.
Steiner-Prag studied art under Gustav Klimt and then became a teacher himself in Leipzig. In 1931 he arrived in Prague where he opened a school for book design and advertising. Before the Second World War he fled to the United States. Clotilde von Derp (1892-1974) is a pivotal figure in the world of modern dance. She began her career in Munich, where among the literati whom she captivated were Rainer Maria Rilke and Jawlensky (who painted a famous portrait of her). By 1913 she was performing with Alexander Sakharoff whom she eventually married in 1919. Together they toured the world to great acclaim and success and inspiring many major photographers and poster artists (like Georges Barbier and Philip Petit) to capture their images. To convey Clotilde's natural grace, elegance and beauty, with a fair suggestion of her sexuality as well, Steiner-Prag presents an erotic image of a butterfly hovering over a phallic flower. Not in DFP.
