The 2nd National Salon of Fine Arts (Plastic Arts) was hosted in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was held on the top floor of Uruguay's most renowned theater, the Teatro Solis, which opened in 1856. Humberto Frangella was a participating artist in the exhibition as well as the designer of its poster. Born in Montevideo, Frangella studied with several masters in the "Círculo de Bellas Artes," focusing on portrait drawings and photography, but experimenting in landscape paintings, book illustrations and poster design. Although his entry into this competition was a watercolor landscape, his poster, by stark contrast is a very sculptural figure of a painter, in a Cubo-Modernist photo-collage style.
