Additional Details

second edition, seventh impression, "seventy-fifth thousand" on title-page. Of the first edition (Melbourne, 1886) only four copies are recorded, with only perhaps a half dozen of this vintage extant. Any copy marked less than One Hundredth Thousand is considered very early and scarce for this book. A publishing phenomenon that "ranks as the most successful Detective Story of all time" (Everyman's Dictionary of Literary Biography, 1960). See Glover & Greene, Victorian Detective Fiction, pp. 123-5. Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
