"Your poem about Maria moved me very much. She was more capable of love and understanding than almost anyone I have ever known, and in so far as I have learned to be human--& I had a great capacity for not being human--it is thanks to her. I was greatly struck, in reading this new life of my grandfather by Professor Irvine, to find that my grandmother played the same part in his development as Maria played, and plays still, as I hope, in mine--the part of interpreter and communicator, of explainer, of deepener of experience."
