HYDE SOLOMON
Lakeside.

Oil on canvas, 1960. 610x763 mm; 24x30 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left recto, and signed in black crayon, verso, on the stretcher bar. Ex-collection Poindexter Gallery, New York, with the original label on the canvas verso.

Solomon (1911-1982) was an abstract painter born in New York. He studied at the Art Students League and Pratt Institute and was an artist-in-residence for four years at Princeton University. He helped found the Jane Street Gallery, an artists' cooperative in Greenwich Village, that over a seven year run provided a place for young, burgeoning artists to showcase their work. The group started with a focus on abstraction, and over the years, many of the members began to seek a compromise between abstraction and representation. Other artists in the collective include Nell Blaine, Ida Fischer and Larry Rivers, who had his first one-man show at the Jane Street Gallery in 1949.
