Haass, Terry (1923-2016)
Abstract.

ca. 1945-1960?

Gouache painting on paper, mounted and matted; 15 ¼ x 8 ¾ in.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Haass is best known for her boldly graphic abstract works. In early life, Haass and her family experienced intense antisemitism in the Czech Republic, causing them to flee as the Nazi regime gained power in Europe. Ultimately, Haass relocated to New York City, where she began her studies at the Art Students League, focusing mostly on printmaking under the tutelage of artists Will Barnet and Harry Sternberg. Her career in New York featured solo-exhibitions and a stint as co-director of the art school and studio Atelier 17 in 1950. In 1951, she received a scholarship to study in Paris, where she remained as a practicing artist for the remainder of her life. (Christina Weyl, Dolan/Maxwell Gallery).
