In 1984 Hanhn "travels to Japan to lecture and conduct workshops at the Kyoto Art Institute in Kyoto, and the Becla House in Shizuhara. While in Japan she meets Eikoh Hosoe and Yasu Suzuka and makes the images for the Shinjuku series." (Quoted from Steve Yates's Betty Hahn: Photography or Maybe Not, University of New Mexico Press, 1995.) Hahn's work from the 1980s and '90s, like this series, is concerned with cinematic and narrative sequences.
