Haring, Keith (1958-1990)
Stedelijk Museum 86, Signed Exhibition Catalogue.

Amsterdam: Stedelijk Museum, 1986.

Limited edition exhibition catalogue, quarto; signed by Haring in black marker on the title alongside a small figural drawing; text printed in Dutch and English; illustrated throughout with full color prints and black-and-white photographs; bound in colorful pictorial wrappers (wrapper starting, spine toned); 12 x 10 in.

Haring's first solo museum exhibition catalogue marked a new turn in his career. "For me, it was an overwhelming experience, showing at the Stedelijk Museum. I felt I had really accomplished something." While there, Haring created completely new, large-scale work. He created the giant untitled work also referred to as "velum," measuring about 40 x 66 feet, with spray paint in one day on the gallery floor. Photographers and journalists captured the execution of the work in real time. The resulting enormus canopy was displayed above the museum's main staircase but was hard to see. Thankfully, it was restored and has been on display in a more suitable fashion since 2017. It is one of a few other large-scale works Haring completed while in Amsterdam, including a 125-foot-long drawing and an enormours mural on the museum's art storage facility.
