First separate edition, oblong folio, in the original paper wrappers; illustrated with etched frontispiece by Sophia Hawthorne, the text dedicated to her; signed on verso of frontispiece "Mrs. N. Saltonstall," very likely Caroline Sanders Saltonstall (1793-1882); frontispiece toned and chipped, old vertical fold to contents; delicate paper wraps chipped and torn with loss; housed in a custom folding box; 13 x 10 1/2 in.

Caroline Saltonstall was married to Nathaniel Saltonstall (1784-1838), and they lived in Salem, Massachusetts. Caroline's sister Mary Elizabeth Sanders married Nathaniel's brother Leverett. The Saltonstall's were friendly with Sophia Peabody. She shared the manuscript of her unpublished Cuban Journal with members of the family, they also purchased her art.
