Hearne was the first European to make an overland trek across northern Canada to arrive on the shore of the Arctic Ocean in 1771. His party relied heavily on the hunting and navigational skills of the Dene people, as they followed the Coppermine River in search of its eponym. When he returned to Prince Wales's Fort in June of 1772, he had walked more than 5,000 miles.
