Helfond learned printmaking with Harry Sternberg at the Art Students League. During the 1930s she taught art and printmaking and instructed a young Robert Blackburn at the Harlem Art Center. During the Depression, she worked for the New York City WPA/FAP Graphic Arts Division in lithography and in the Silk Screen Unit. Here she advanced silk screening as a fine art medium. After her work at the WPA ended in 1941, she continued to work and teach printmaking, but her style moved from Social Realism to one of powerful abstraction, as in the present color lithograph.
