In many of his finest posters, Gawthorn employed his signature, stylized graphic ability to depict the privileged classes engaging in their exclusive and elegant pastimes. His Art Deco-inspired illustrations were largely executed using flat colors and no outlining, in a manner reminiscent of Ludwig Hohlwein and Fred Taylor. This evocative evening street scene in calming shades of blue, punctuated by complementary orange light, is one of two posters he designed promoting travel to India.
