Horace, Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BCE)
Poemata in quibus Multa Correcta sunt & Institutiones suis locis positae, Commentariorum quodammodo vice funguntur.

Venice: Aldus, 1509.

Octavo, second Aldine edition, anchor and dolphin woodcut device to title page, some soiling, a few wormholes; bound in later full sponge-decorated sheepskin, likely Spanish, aeg., some faint marginal notes imperfectly washed away, some chipping to the fore-margins of a few leaves, occasional water stains; 6 1/8 x 3 3/4 in.

"Ambroise Firmin-Didot calls Aldus's second Horace almost as rare as his first (1501). The 1509 edition is also of special interest for its dedication to Charles Giaffredo (or de Jouffrey), who in 1506 had secured Aldus's release from imprisonment on a false arrest at Mantua, when the former was in Italy as an ambassador from the King of France. Aldus thought in some measure to repay his benefactor by this dedication, having in mind that the poet Horace had similarly repaid his benefactor, Maecenus, by the dedication of his works to him." (Quoted from a 1968 Goodspeed's catalogue.)
