Kihlen (born 1917) emerged onto the Buenos Aires art scene after many years of practice, shortly after turning sixty. She studied at the National School of Decorative Arts in Buenos Aires while simultaneously pursuing music. She also trained with artists such as Emilio Pettoruti, Juan Batlle Planas, Pío Collivadino and André Lhote. While Kihlen's work is mostly non-figurative, many of her compositions contain references to music such as hovering keyboard-like forms, clefs and staves. Her color palette is generally reserved, however, her works exude vibrant, playful energy, and in Kandinsky-esque fashion, seemingly present windows into new dimensions where forms float freely through space. Kihlen has exhibited her work widely throughout South America, North America and Europe.
