Gothic type. 4to, 199x141 mm, old limp vellum with thong catches and clasps, soiled and worn, contents partly loose in binding; marginal soiling through most of volume, scattered foxing, dampstaining at beginning and end, scattered occasionally dark stains elsewhere, first leaf crudely remargined and rehinged without text loss, few early marginalia, indistinct stamp on first page, later pen and pencil inscriptions on front endleaf. scarce first edition of the earliest extant manual of modern chess, published together with a misogynistic poem on love not present in this copy. Lucena's book, containing a discussion of 11 openings and 150 problems, is thought to be based on a 1495 work in Catalan by Francesc Vicent, of which no copy survives.
