This bust is one of a long series of portraits started in 1963 entitled Negro Giants in History by Inge Hardison, a sculptor and photographer. Born in Portsmouth, VA, Hardison attended Tennessee State A&I and Vassar College in the 1930s and the Arts Students League in the 1940s. Known for her historical portraits, Hardison's wood figure Sojourner Truth was presented to Nelson Mandela by New York Governor Mario Cuomo in 1990. Her work is in the collection of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York. St. James pp. 229-30.
