In 1884, Theodore Roosevelt was a Harvard graduate and rising young star in the New York state assembly. He put his life of comfort and privilege on hold to try his hand at ranching in the Dakota Territory. The photograph was printed long before Roosevelt came to national prominence as a soldier, president, and conservationist.
