IRAKLI M. TOIDZE [THE MOTHERLAND IS CALLING.] 1941.
40x28 inches.
Condition B+: restored losses in margins and corners; vertical and horizontal folds. Japan.
One of the earliest of the Russian World War II posters, this image "appeared soon after the German invasion of Russia in 1941" (Zeman p. 41). Mother Russia is figuratively depicted in a symbolic red coat and she is holding in her hand a broadside bearing the text of the Russian military oath. Both this text and the poster's title appear in many of the disparate languages of the former Soviet Union. Militant Poster 25, Zeman p. 40 (var).
