ISMAEL DE LA SERNA
Pilze.

Oil on wood panel, 1926. 212x273 mm; 8 1/2x10 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower left recto.

Serna (1898-1968) was born in Granada and early on in school became friends with the later to become famous poet Federico García Lorca. In 1918, Serna illustrated Lorca's first book Impresiones y Paisajes.

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Granada in the late 1910s, Serna moved to Paris in 1921 and was introduced by the publisher and collector Tériade to Pablo Picasso, who favorably compared his work to Juan Gris. Serna exhibited frequently in Paris during the 1920s and also had a solo exhibition at Galerie Flechtheim, Berlin, where he continued to show his work successfully until 1933 when the Nazi regime declared his art to be degenerate (it's thought that much of his most important work from the 1920s was destroyed in Berlin by the Nazis).
