ISRAEL VAN MECKENEM
The Visit to the Spinner.

Engraving, circa 1495-1503. 161x110 mm; 6 3/8x4 3/8 inches. Gothic letter P watermark. Ex-collection the Albertina, Vienna (Lugt 174, verso); and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (Lugt supplement 1932d, verso). Trimmed on the plate mark. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early engraving.

From a series of 12 engravings, Scenes of Everyday Life, van Meckenem created toward the end of his career. The artist's observations of late Gothic/early Renaissance interiors, furniture and household accoutrements in this series are unsurpassed in printed form during the late 15th-century. Bartsch 183; Lehrs 509.
