ITALIA. 1936.
39 3/8x24 3/8 inches. Coen & Co., Milan.
Condition B+: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
One of two images Cassandre produced for the ENIT (Italian Railway) during a summer's stay in Italy with his assistant Raymond Savignac in 1935. Here the focus is on art, history and religion. In a style far more suggestive and surrealistic than his Machine Age images of trains and ocean liners, Cassandre depicts the Madonna and Child and Roman ruins with faint mountains visible in the background.
