ITALIAN SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY
The Arch of Septimius Severus, Rome.

Watercolor and pen and ink on heavy cream laid paper. 340x497 mm; 13 1/2x19 1/2 inches.

Dedicated in AD 203, the arch celebrates the victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons Caracalla and Geta over the Parthians. After the emperor's death, his sons were joint rulers until Caracalla had Geta assassinated in AD 212 and all images and mention of Geta were destroyed, including his images and inscriptions from the arch.
