J. E. M CRANS GOLF-ALPIN. Circa 1930.
391/4x271/2 inches. Simplon, Lausanne.
Condition A-: minor creases in margins.
Dapper and poised to swing, a golfer high in the Swiss Alps is surrounded by the wonderful summer vista afforded to visitors of Crans. The idea of golf in this Alpine setting, with views of Mont Blanc, surrounded by fir trees, woods and fields, belongs to an Englishman, Henry Lunn, who helped open Europe's highest golf course on this Valais plateau circa 1908. It is world renowned as "the most beautiful Alpine golf course" and has been the site of the Swiss Open since 1939. The resort became even more popular after 1911, when both a funicular railway linking Crans to Sierre and downhill skiing were introduced.
