Map of the Port & Vicinity of New York to accompany a Report on Yellow Fever By the Physician in Chief at the Marine Hospital Quarantine, Staten Island. Hand-colored lithographed folding map, New York, circa 1857. 22 1/2x21 3/4 inches.

Additional Details

The first reported case of yellow fever in New York occurred in 1702, but the fear of the contagious disease persisted into the mid-nineteenth century. Vessels suspected of carrying yellow fever were quarantined at the Staten Island station beginning in the 1830s. In 1858, responding to possible plans of expanding the quarantine center, Staten Islanders rioted and destroyed the marine station. It was rebuilt a year later. This map is an uncommon view of New York harbor, with typical detailing and aesthetics of a Colton production.
