Two women in pink and purple are taking in the view of La Concha Bay, with vignettes of the royal palace buildings and a rider on a brown horse, all framed within a gold border. San Sebastian was the site of numerous wars and sieges until the late 19th century, when the royal court of Madrid took up summer residence there. The city soon became a popular tourist destination and spa resort during the Belle Epoque period, attracting wealthy vacationers with a race track, a casino and a golf course.
