J. VINCENZ CISSARZ (1873-1942) ZU NEUER RENAISSANCE. 1900.
333/4x221/4 inches. Kunst-Anst-Theodor Beye, Dresden.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and corners; restored losses in corners; sharp vertical and horizontal folds in image.
Cissarz was one of the pioneers of poster art in Germany. Involved in many different aspects of the decorative arts, he was a painter and a teacher who worked all over Germany. Von zur Westen, who considered Cissarz "a first class poster artist," described this poster as "a color dream of striking beauty." This piece is an important example of the transition between the prevailing style of classical painting and the new concept of graphic design. The young man's white robe, depicted in flat colors and no outlining and the stylized flight of birds at the top are already presaging a new era in design, which is also the subject of the poster, as the man is drinking to "a new renaissance"!
