J. ŠEBEK (DATES UNKNOWN) LENINGRADER MUSIK - FESTSPIELE. 1934.
39 3/4x28 inches, 101x71 cm. Intourist, USSR.
Condition A-: creases, minor repaired tears and abrasions at edges.
Intourist was founded in 1929 for the purpose of facilitating foreign visits to the Soviet Union. This state-controlled tourism served the dual purpose of propagating Socialism and the Soviet way of life to the outside world, while also helping the impoverished Bolshevik government to raise much-needed foreign currency. The glory days of avant-garde design, Constructivism and photomontage in the Soviet Union had disappeared by the mid 1930s. Stalin preferred the smiling peasant form of Socialist Realism and the conservative artists within the government propaganda agencies were only too happy to oblige. As an exception, travel posters that were targeted to a public outside the country were designed with more flair. This is the German version. Intourist pl. 11 (var.)
