JACINT BOFARULL ELS AIXAFAREM!!! 1937.
39 1/4x27 7/8 inches. Ultra, Barcelona.
Condition A-: minor tears in margins; minor restored loss in bottom margin.
Active in Barcelona, Bofarull was a highly talented graphic designer. His posters for Beristain, a luxury goods store, designed in the early 1930s, are in the purest Art Deco style. But Bofarull also had a strong political orientation. From the very first day of the revolution on the 19th of July, 1936, which was the start of the Spanish Civil War, Bofarull was a founding member of the Revolutionary Committee of the Syndicate of Designers, along with some of the other most prominent Spanish poster artists of the era. This rare poster is a tribute to El Lissitsky's Red Wedge (see Swann Modernist Poster sale 2039, lot 70), depicting a red wedge of stylized Republican soldiers smashing through a giant swastika, with the phrase "we will crush it with the People's Army." With its perfect use of the diagonal, this poster is one of the most graphically achieved posters of the Spanish Civil War.
