Born of Lituanian Jewish parents and raised in the South End of Boston, Levine (1915-2010) was already a well-regarded artist when he created the same-titled painting from which this print is derived, 1952-53, now in the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and considered his chef d'oeuvre . A prodigious art student, Levine had worked as a painter in the Works Progress Administration (1935-40) and by the late 1930s/early 1940s was showing at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
