JACK WHITTEN (1939 - )
Grid Revisited (Study for Black Monolith, III).

Sumi ink on Rives, collaged on Rag board, 1997. 406x406 mm; 16x16 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed in pencil, verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection.

This beautiful work on paper is one of only three studies for the large-scale painting Black Monolith III: For Barbara Jordan, a tribute to the late US black congresswoman that has hung in the US Embassy mission residence in Dakar, Senegal. These monumental heroic homages are an important part of his later work--Whitten also made similar pieces like Black Monolith: Homage to James Baldwin, 1988 and Black Monolith II: for Ralph Ellison, 1994.
