Acrylic with collage on canvas, mounted on masonite, 1987. 229x356 mm; 9 1/2x14 inches. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "9 1/2x14" in pencil twice on the verso, on the canvas and the upper stretcher bar.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection.

Born in Bessemer, AL, Jack Whitten moved to New York in 1960 and graduated from Cooper Union in 1964. In 1968, Whitten's work was included in both The Inaugural Show at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Harlem on My Mind at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He had solo exhibitions at Allan Stone Gallery, New York, and was included in two Whitney Annuals before his solo exhibition in 1974 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His paintings were also exhibited in the landmark 1971 exhibition Contemporary Black Artists in America at the Whitney Museum, and the influential Energy/Experimentation: Black Artists and Abstraction 1964–1980 at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2006.
