In the early 1970s, Jack Whitten experimented with various dry pigments on paper, including a series with toner during his 1974 artist residency at the Xerox Corporation. Two similar toner works, Broken Spaces #1 and Broken Spaces #5, both 1974, are now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. According to Alexander Gray Associates, Whitten's groundbreaking painting and drawing from this period "emphasize[s] Whitten's interest in horizontal gesture, underlying surfaces, and materiality."
