Gesso, colored pencils and graphite on wove paper, 1978. 432x578 mm; 17x22 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in green ink, lower right recto. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "gesso, colored pencil & graphite on paper" and "17 " x 22 3/4" " in pencil, verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, New York; private collection, New York.

This work on paper by Jack Whitten has a beautiful built-up surface, with incised white marks that are occassionally punctuated by color pencils. It is a study for his 1977-78 acrylic paintings Kappa II and Sigma II, exhibited recently in Jack Whitten: Five Decades of Painting at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, CA.
