JACKSON LEE NESBITT
Teeming Ingots (Men And Steel).

Etching, 1938. 299x230 mm; 11<3/4>x 9 inches, full margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. Ex-collection William S. Pelletier, with his stamp verso.

"The men wore heavy blue glasses so they could see when the ingot molds were filled with the molten steel from the ladle. When filled, rice bran was shoveled over the molten steel causing a sudden flare up and a settling down of ash. This was done to allow the gases to be released while maintaining most of the intense heat. If the gases were not expelled in this way, holes would occur and the ingot would be ruined." -Jaskson Lee Nesbitt; from: Jackson Lee Nesbitt, Stone and Press, 1993. Collection: Muscarelle Museum of Art, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. Retif/Salzer 9.
