Additional Details

Peggy Jean was Epstein's first child, born to Dorothy Lindsell-Stewart in 1918 in Paris. Epstein was inspired by the child, and according to June Rose in Daemons and Angels : A Life of Jacob Epstein (2002), the artist once remembered, "I never tire of watching her and to watch her was for me, to work from her. To make studies in clay of all her moods; and when she tired and fell asleep, there was something new to do." Epstein created fifteen portraits of Peggy Jean throughout her childhood, the most of any of his models.
