JACOB EPSTEIN
First Portrait of Oriel Ross.

Bronze, 1925. 533 mm; 21 inches (height). Edition of 5.

Ross, born Muriel May Swinstead, was an actress and among Epstein's (1880-1959) favorite models. Ross stayed with the Epstein family, along with several of the artist's models, and artists Matthew Smith and Muirhead Bone, at their large home at 23 Guilford Street, London (the Epsteins were at this address from 1916 to 1928). After the current portrait was made, Epstein created two more versions. Epstein, along with more than 40 of his sculptures, including a cast of the First Portrait of Oriel Ross, came to New York in 1927 for his solo exhibition at Ferargil Galleries, which sold Epstein's works to some of the top American museums and collectors, including Selina to the Brooklyn Museum of Art and Madonna and Child (through a loan) to The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Buckle 212; Silber 158.
