JACOB EPSTEIN
Third Portrait of Jackie, Laughing (Ragamuffin).

Bronze, 1940. 216 mm; 8 1/2 inches (height, excluding base). Edition of 11. With the artist's initial at the nape of the neck, verso.

The artist's portrait of his son, Jacob, whom Epstein called "Jackie". Epstein (1880-1959) met Jackie's mother, Isabel Nicholas, in the summer of 1932 when she had approached the artist for a modeling job. Nicholas stayed with Epstein's family at Hyde Park Gate, sharing a bedroom with his teenage daughter. By the winter of 1934, Nicholas was pregnant with Epstein's child and Margaret, the artist's wife, then 61, feigned pregnancy in the public eye so that she could raise the child as her own. After Jackie's birth in September 1934, Nicholas traveled to Paris to make a career as an artist, leaving her son with the Epsteins.

Buckle 391; Silber 309.
