JACOB LAWRENCE (1907 - 2000)
The Pentecost.

Color lithograph, 1965. 340x457 mm; 13 3/8x18 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed, dated and titled in pencil, lower margin. Printer unknown. Published by United Homeland Ministries, Boston. Light struck, colors faded.

This lithograph is the first known hand-signed and numbered impression of an edition that was apparently never realized. Nesbett states "No numbered or hand-signed copies are known to exist, as of March 2001. The print reproduced (in the catalogue)…was in the artist's collection at the time of his death on June 7, 2000." Jacob Lawrence arrived late to printmaking - he began making prints mid-career, despite his early exposure to printmaking at the Harlem Art Center during the WPA. This extremely scarce, early lithograph is the artist's second print - made two years after his first, and before he made a commitment to printmaking in the 1970s. Nesbett L65-1.
