JACOB LAWRENCE (1917 - 2000)
Revolt on the Amistad.

Color screenprint on Bainbridge Two Ply Rag paper, 1989. 889x651 mm; 35x25 5/8 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 42/120 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Lou Stovall, Workshop, Inc., Washington DC, with the blind stamp lower left. Published by the Aetna Life Insurance Company and Spalding-Ames, Key West, FL. A very good impression with strong colors of this large print.

Published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Amistad incident, when in 1839, 53 Africans slaves revolted and took over the Spanish ship La Amistad. Captured in U.S. waters, abolitionists took the case as far as the Supreme Court for the surviving 35 Mendians' release, and two years later they were returned to Sierra Leone. Nesbett L89-2.
