JACOB LAWRENCE (1917 - 2000)
The Pentecost.

Color lithograph, 1965. 340x457 mm; 13 3/8x18 inches, full margins. Edition size unknown. Printed by United Church Press, Boston/Philadelphia. Published by United Homeland Ministries, Boston. From Christian Concepts in Art: Seven Original Lithographs.

A group of artists including Jacob Lawrence were comissioned to create a series of lithographs illustrating "seven concepts universal to the Christian faith." The printed sleeve from the orginal publication is included.

Peter Nesbett states "No numbered or hand-signed copies are known to exist, as of March 2001." A faded example of this print, that was in fact signed and titled by Lawrence came to auction at Swann in 2007. This lithograph, however, is of similar quality to an example in the artist's catalogue raisonné, found in his personal collection at the time of his death. Lawrence arrived late to printmaking - he began making prints mid-career, despite his early exposure to printmaking at the Harlem Art Center during the WPA. This extremely scarce, early lithograph is just the artist's second print - made two years after his first, and before he made a commitment to printmaking in the 1970s. Nesbett L65-1.
