JACOB VAN RUISDAEL
Cottage at the Top of a Hill.

Etching on China paper. 196x277 mm; 73/4x11 inches, small to thread margins. A very good impression with strong contrasts.

A native of Haarlem, Rusidael (circa 1628-1682) likely trained with his father and later relocated to Amsterdam, where he is listed as a free citizen in 1659. This print shows Ruisdael's obsession with trees; while in many 17th-century Dutch prints they are merely part of the landscape, trees in Ruisdael's prints appear as the main focus, imbued with forceful personalities. The densely etched trees in the current work have something in common with the large, old, knarled tree to the left of Rembrandt's "The Omval" (Bartsch 209) and the heavily drypointed "Clump of Trees with a Vista" (Bartsch 222). Bartsch 3.
