JACOB WILHELM MECHAU
(Leipzig 1745-1808 Dresden)
River Landscape with a Ruined Tower and Bridge.

Black chalk and gray, brown, pink and green wash on cream laid paper. 255x293 mm; 10 1/8x11 1/2 inches. Ex-collection Holtkott, ink stamp verso (not in Lugt).

Mechau, a friend of Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807), was active mainly in Dresden as a landscape painter. In this genre his work reflects the contemporary Rembrandt revival, best seen in the dramatic contrast of lighting visible in the current drawing. On the other hand, Mechau's sensitivity for elements like the ruined tower or the fallen tree anticipates Romanticism.
