JACQUES AURIAC (1922-2003) BALLY. 1981.
67x44 1/2 inches, 170 1/4x113 cm. I.P.A., Paris.
Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and text.
Auriac studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and went on to a career as a poster designer. He worked under contract for de La Vasselais, a large French publisher that also represented Hervé Morvan, and at one time, Raymond Savignac. Auriac worked on many prominent accounts including Bally, Evian, Gitanne cigarettes, and for various airlines. Color, vibrancy and humor are all qualities evident in Auriac's poster design. Sometimes employed as a single method and sometimes in concert, his posters are always eye-catching and exude modernity. This poster and the following lot, advertising men's and women's shoes for Bally, closely recall Auriac's poster from 1960 for LIP wristwatches (Swann sale 2314 Lot 178), where he uses the same bold, simple lines and flat planes of color to create an abstract depiction of movement.
