JACQUES BELLENGER (1903-1985) & PIERRE BELLENGER (1909-) BALLY. Circa 1950.

Condition A.
Jacques and Pierre Bellenger were twin brothers who worked together their whole lives. After studying at the Académie Julian, they opened a studio and worked on advertising campaigns for major companies. Bally, founded in 1851 by Carl Franz Bally, started using posters for advertising in 1910 and prospered tremendously from the glamorous and sophisticated images produced by a series of gifted artists. Borrowing from a near-iconic image designed by Leonetto Cappiello in 1929 for Nitrolian paint, the Bellenger brothers cleverly use a staircase motif to help promote the Swiss luxury shoe brand. The vivid primary colors and interesting diagonal created by the carpeted stairway create a dynamic image, that benefits from its unofficial association with Cappiello. Besides being graphically strong, the Bellenger poster is also efficient, advertising both the mens' and womens' shoe lines. The blank space at the bottom was reserved for local stores to put their addresses.
