JACQUES MAJORELLE (1862-1962)

LE MAROC PAR MARSEILLE. 1926.

41 3/4x29 3/4 inches, 106x75 1/2 cm. Lucien Serre, Paris.
Condition A. Framed.

Primarily a painter and watercolorist, Majorelle (son of the famous Art Nouveau furniture designer Louis Majorelle) may be best remembered for the botanical garden he designed and landscaped in Marrakech. The garden bears his name, as does a color he used extensively in the garden, "Majorelle Blue." The graphic simplicity and flat colours that are a feature of all five posters produced by Majorelle combine here to produce a stylised image of great elegance" (Orientalist p. 52). Orientalist p. 53, Golden Age p. 135.
