The first two impressions, the etched outlines (planche de trait).

The third impression, the aquatint plate, printed in black over the lightly-printed planche de trait.

The fourth impression, a combination of the first two plates, printed in brown, with a new aquatint plate printed in dark brown. Inscribed "Essai" in pencil, lower left.

The fifth impression, with much of the planche de trait deeply engraved, in combination with the second dark aquatint plate, with an etched signature added. Inscribed "Essai" in pencil, lower left.

The sixth impression, all of the previous plates combined, with a bluish aquatint tone plate at the top. Inscribed "essai définitif" in pencil, lower left.
