JACQUES VILLON
Le Nègre en Bonne Fortune.

Color aquatint and etching printed in brown, red and green on cream wove paper, 1899. 225x335 mm; 8 7/8x13 1/4 inches, full margins. The bon à tirer proof, before the edition of 25. Signed and inscribed "bon à tirer" in pencil, lower right. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early proof.

Villon made his first color aquatints, this work and Bernadette, in 1899 at the urging of his friend and studio partner at the time Francis Jourdain. Ginestet/Pouillon 22.
