JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Beatrix Whistler.

Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1893. 173x90 mm; 6 7/8x3 1/2 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Edition of 17. Printed by Goulding, London, in 1903 (there were no lifetime impressions according to Spink, et als). Ex-collection Rosalind Bernie Philip, the artist's sister-in-law; and Louis B. Dailey, with his ink stamp verso (not in Lugt 405). A superb impression of this scarce print, with strong contrasts.

We have found only 2 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years.

Beatrix, affectionately known to him as "Trixie," Whistler's wife died of cancer in 1896. This lithograph was printed by Goulding under the direction of Rosalind Bernie Philip, Beatrix's sister and executor of Whistler's estate, and remained in her collection until her death in 1958. Levy 64; Spink 80.
